Layali Derbeki Performance at Borders

Layali Derbeki - a nine-piece percussion ensemble - enraptured their audience at Borders Books & Music in Marlton, NJ on Friday July 30th. Their drumming and dancing show delighted the cafe patrons who enjoyed Middle Eastern and Spanish rhythms and movements as they sipped their cappuccinos and lattes.

The first stop on the musical odyssey was Spain, where the incomparable Nagwa Sai'd performed an intense Flamenco dance to a Boulerias, a Latin rhythm in 12/8. She clapped and stamped her feet in syncopation to the soloing of troupe leader, Joseph Tayoun, and the steady beats of the ensemble.

Morocco was next. Sahda Ma'suda danced expertly, deflty moving her hips and even doing floor work, while balancing a tray of lit candles on her head. The piece also featured authentic Moroccan hand cymbals, called carcabas.

To show off their musicality, the group's last number of the first set featured two complex rhythms - Karisalama, in 9/8, and Samai, in 10/8. The arrangement wove together different variations and instruments, which created an intricate fabric of sound.

After the intermission, Layali Derbeki came back strong with a 3-part piece consisting of a rhumba, chiftetelli, and a masmoudi. Magdelena, dressed Spanish-style, mesmerized the audience with her fiery eyes and dancing. Aisha then took the stage with her sword, which she balanced on her head as she did slow undulations and backbends.

The troupe ended the evening with a show-stopping number featuring four different Middle Eastern beats. Fairouza got earthy during the beledi section, with her deep drops and sharp body locks. Next, Alexandra fused ballet and Egyptian style together as she gracefully danced to a Bombi.

The last dancer of the evening was Nagwa Sai'd who exorcised all the demons in the place with her magnificent Zar dance. As the rest of the group played the trance-inducing rhythm, Nagwa demonstrated the powerful moves, which are used to chase away bad spirits.

At the end of the performance, the inspired audience could not help but get up and dance as the talented musicians and dancers of Layali Derbeki drummed their way into the hearts and imaginations of the crowd.
