A front view of the human female reproductive system is shown in the figure. Which structure secretes estrogen?

This question asks us about a structure that secretes estrogen in the human female reproductive system. In order to answer correctly, let’s review the structures presented in our diagram.

Structure A points to the uterus, which is a hollow organ in a biological female’s pelvis, in which a zygote can implant, develop, and grow into a baby. Label B is also pointing to the uterus, specifically to the point at which it connects to one of the two fallopian tubes. The fallopian tube, which is also called an oviduct, is labeled by the letter C. These two tubes connect the two ovaries to the uterus. After ovulation, an egg cell travels along a fallopian tube toward the uterus.

You might recall that fertilization usually occurs within the fallopian tubes. If an embryo accidentally implants in the fallopian tube, it results in an ectopic pregnancy, which is a very serious complication. Label D points to the cervix, which leads from the uterus to the vaginal canal. Finally, E is pointing to one of the two ovaries. Ovaries have two main functions in the female reproductive system. They produce and secrete egg cells, or ova, during ovulation. In addition, the ovaries release hormones, two of which are important for regulating the menstrual cycle and reproduction. These hormones are estrogen and progesterone.

Since our question asks “Which structure secretes estrogen?” in our diagram, the correct answer is E.
