What time is it? Find the missing number. It is half past blank.
The phrase “half past” tells us about the minute hand. Half past some hour means 30 minutes after some hour. And that means that our minute hand, the long hand, will be pointing to the six. To fill in our blank, we’ll need to look at the hour hand, the short hand.
Here our hour hand falls between eight and nine. Since the hour hand is between eight and nine, we know that it’s past eight and before nine, 30 minutes past or half past eight. The time shown on this clock is 30 minutes after eight o’clock. Another way to say that is half past eight. The missing number is eight.
