Telling Time in Words: Time to the Half Hour

In this video, we will learn how to tell the time to the half hour on an analog clock and record the time in words.

This is an analog clock. This is the face of the clock. The long hand is called the minute hand, and the shorter hand is called the hour hand. We use the numbers on the clock to help us tell the time. The numbers can help us to decide what hour it is or how many minutes past or to the hour it is. Each of the marks or intervals on the clock is worth one minute.

There are 60 minutes in one hour. When the minute hand is pointing to number 12, we know it’s something o’clock. The minute hand moves around the clock one minute at a time. The larger intervals are worth five minutes. How many minutes have passed? We know that each of these larger pink intervals is worth five minutes, five, 10. 10 minutes have passed. 15, 20, 25, 30. When the minute hand reaches number six, half an hour has passed. 30 minutes is half an hour. When the minute hand is pointing to number six, we know it’s half past the hour. Let’s practice telling the time to the half hour.

What time is shown on the clock?

The hour hand on the clock is between four and five. This means the time is between 4 and 5 o’clock, past 4 o’clock, but not 5 o’clock yet. The minute hand on this clock is pointing to number six, which means it’s half past something. The minute hand started at 12, at o’clock, and it’s turned halfway around the clock. It’s half past four. The time shown on the clock is half past four.

Fill in the blank. What time is it? It is half past what.

We can see that the hour hand on the clock is pointing halfway between the numbers one and two. This means it’s between 1 and 2 o’clock. And the minute hand is pointing to number six. When the minute hand is pointing to number six, it means it’s half past the hour. The minute hand started at number 12, which is o’clock. And it’s made half a turn around the clock. It’s half past one. The time on the clock is half past one. The missing word is one.

James and Matthew want to draw half past two. Who is right, James or Matthew?

The minute hand on James’s clock is pointing at number six. The minute hand on Matthew’s clock is between the number two and the number three. The minute hand on James’s clock has made half a turn from o’clock to half past. Does James’s clock say half past two? Let’s check the hour hand.

The hour hand is pointing between number two and number three. This means the hour is between 2 and 3 o’clock. It’s after 2 o’clock, but not quite 3 o’clock. So James’s clock says half past two. James is correct. The hour hand on Matthew’s clock is pointing to number six, which means it’s something past six. This means that James is correct because his clock shows half past two.

What have we learned in this video? We’ve learned how to tell the time to the half hour using an analog clock.
