Is 54 less than, equal to, or greater than 44?

In comparing these two numbers, we’ll need to compare, starting with their highest place value. These are both two-digit numbers. They have a digit in the tens place and a digit in the ones place. We’re going to start by comparing what’s in the tens place.

In the tens place, 54 has the digit five and 44 has the digit four. We know that five is larger than four. And that tells us that 54 is larger than 44. To represent 54 being bigger than 44, we use the greater than symbol, like this. 54 is greater than 44.
