Lesson Plan: Comparing Two Digit Numbers: Place Value Mathematics • 1st Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to compare tens and ones of two-digit numbers using place values, words, and symbols.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • compare two-digit numbers using words,
  • compare two-digit numbers using symbols,
  • determine whether or not it is possible to compare two-digit numbers using words or symbols,
  • understand and explain how changing the number of tens or ones changes the size of the number.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • reading and writing two-digit numbers,
  • the place values of two-digit numbers,
  • using the symbols <, >, and =,
  • comparing two-digit numbers using models.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • comparing numbers using number lines,
  • comparing numbers with more than 2 digits,
  • ordering numbers.
