How many marbles are there?
We’re shown a number of marbles. Some of the marbles have been grouped together in 10 frames. Each 10 frame contains 10 marbles. The rest of the marbles are not in a 10 frame. Let’s count them: one, two, three, four, five, six. How many marbles are there altogether? To work out how many marbles there are, we can count in tens and then in ones.
There are four groups of 10: 10, 20, 30, 40. Four tens makes 40. There are six more marbles. So we need to count on six more: one, that takes us to 41, two, three, four more takes us to 44, five, six. Four groups of 10 is 40 and six more makes 46.
There are 46 marbles altogether.
