This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use elementary row operations to find the inverse of a matrix if possible.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • invert a matrix 𝐴 by creating the augmented matrix (𝐴𝐼) and performing row operations on it to get 𝐼𝐴,
  • show that a matrix is not invertible by performing row operations until a pivot entry appears in the right-hand side of the augmented matrix.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • matrix inverses,
  • elementary row operations.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • reduced row echelon form,
  • solving a system of equations directly using row operations.
