Michael drove 244 kilometers in four hours. Giving your answer correct to one decimal place, what is his average speed in kilometers per hour?

We are told in the question that Michael drove a distance of 244 kilometers. This took him a time of four hours. We are asked to calculate his average speed in kilometers per hour. The average speed of a journey is equal to the total distance divided by the total time. We know this from our speed–distance–time triangle. We need to divide 244 by four.

Two is not divisible by four, so we carry this two to the tens column. 24 divided by four is six. Finally, four divided by four is equal to one. Michael’s average speed was 61 kilometers per hour. We were asked to give our answer to one decimal place. However, our answer in this question was an integer. If we did want to have one digit after the decimal point, we could write this as 61.0 kilometers per hour.
