When preparing a cereal bowl for breakfast, 63 percent of people put the cereal in first. Express 63 percent as a decimal.

The word “percent” means out of 100, so 63 percent is 63 out of 100. This can be written as a fraction, with 63 as the numerator and 100 as the denominator. The line in a fraction means divide. So this is equal to 63 divided by 100. When dividing by 100, all of our digits move two places to the right. 63 divided by 100 is 0.63. We can therefore conclude that 63 percent expressed as a decimal is 0.63.

This leads us to a general rule that when we are converting from percentages to decimals, we need to divide the percentage by 100. Converting from a decimal to a percentage involves multiplying by 100.
