The diagram shows an outline of the
male reproductive system. What number indicates a testis?
The question asks us to identify
the location of the testis in the male reproductive system. You might already know that the
testes are the sites of sperm production in biological males. They are also where the majority of
male sex hormones are produced. Sperm cells are the male sex
cells. The main function of the sperm cell
is to fertilize a biological female’s sex cell, the egg cell, to create new
life. Males tend to have two testes, but
only one testis is visible on this side-view diagram.
As already mentioned, the testes
are where sperm cells are produced. The efficient production of sperm
cells requires specific conditions. Sperm production requires a
slightly lower temperature than the normal body temperature. This is achieved by the testes
being positioned outside the body in a sac of skin called the scrotum, labeled as
number 4 in our diagram. This keeps the testes at a cooler
temperature, more suitable for the sperm production process.
As we have established the testes
are found within the scrotum, we are now able to answer our question. Within the scrotum, a structure
labeled 3 is visible. This label points to a testis. So the number that indicates a
testis is 3.
