The line plot shows the magnitude
of several recent earthquakes. Find all the modal values of the
data.
In this question, we’re asked to
find all of the modal values of a data set represented in a given line plot. To answer this question, we can
begin by recalling that the modal values, or value, are the values that appear the
most in the data set. If every value appears equally
often, then we say that there is no mode.
To determine which magnitudes
appear the most in the data set, we can recall that each marking on the line plot
represents one value. So, because there are two crosses
above 2.2, we can say that the value of 2.2 appears twice in the data set. We can follow this process for all
of the values in the line plot. We get the following frequencies
for each value. We can see that 3.1 is the most
frequent of the magnitudes. So we can say that this is the
modal value. Since this is the only value that
appears four times, we have shown that there is only one mode in the data set, and
it is 3.1.
