Lesson Plan: The Mode of a Data Set Mathematics • 6th Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find and interpret the mode of a data set.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- recognize that the mode is one of the measures of central tendency,
- recall that a data set can have a unique mode, more than one mode, or no mode (when no value appears more than another),
- calculate the mode of a data set,
- calculate the mode for data given in a table or a bar graph,
- calculate an unknown value in a data set given its mode.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- calculating the mean of a data set,
- calculating the median of a data set.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- estimating the mode of a data set for grouped data,
- the mode of grouped data.
