Lesson Plan: The Mode of a Data Set Mathematics • 6th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find and interpret the mode of a data set.

Students will be able to

  • recognize that the mode is one of the measures of central tendency,
  • recall that a data set can have a unique mode, more than one mode, or no mode (when no value appears more than another),
  • calculate the mode of a data set,
  • calculate the mode for data given in a table or a bar graph,
  • calculate an unknown value in a data set given its mode.

Students should already be familiar with

  • calculating the mean of a data set,
  • calculating the median of a data set.

Students will not cover
