Lesson Plan: Magnetic Fields Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to correctly draw the field lines of the magnetic field created by a magnet and relate field lines to the force experienced by two magnets.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recognize and draw the field lines of the magnetic field produced by a bar magnet,
  • recall that the arrows on the field lines of magnetic fields point from the north pole to the south pole,
  • recall that the strength of the magnetic field is indicated by how close together the field lines are,
  • recall that the magnetic field is generally stronger closer to the magnet,
  • recall that if a compass is placed in a magnetic field, it will align to the field lines, with the north end pointing in the direction of the arrows,
  • recall that two wide, flat magnets both aligned the same way will produce a roughly uniform field between them,
  • recognize the shape of the magnetic field between two wide, flat, antialigned magnets,
  • identify the orientation of a magnet given its field lines.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • attraction and repulsion between magnets,
  • forces.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • magnetic fields generated by currents,
  • field lines of a solenoid,
  • calculation of the field strength of direction,
  • how Earth produces its magnetic field.
