Lesson Plan: DNA Biology

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the structure of DNA and explain how DNA can be extracted from organic material.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe the structure of DNA as a polymer made up of repeating monomer subunits called nucleotides,
  • describe how the two strands of DNA form a double helix shape, with a sugar–phosphate backbone,
  • explain that the double helix shape is maintained by the complementary base pairings (A to T and C to G),
  • describe the structure of a nucleotide as a central deoxyribose sugar bonded to a nitrogenous base and a phosphate group,
  • state DNA that is read in the 5’ to 3’ direction,
  • explain how DNA can be extracted from organic material, such as fruit.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • DNA being in animal cells,
  • an organism being formed of cells,
  • the basic ideas of bonding.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • DNA replication,
  • the difference between purines and pyrimidines.
