This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to solve two-step addition and subtraction problems with numbers up to 100 by drawing part–whole and comparative bar models.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- model each step of a two-step word problem with a comparison or part–whole bar model,
- write an equation for each step in a word problem using bar models,
- decide whether to use addition or subtraction to solve each step in a word problem,
- solve two-step word problems.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- writing addition and subtraction equations,
- adding and subtracting two-digit numbers,
- solving one-step word problems using comparison and part–whole bar models.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- numbers over 100,
- two-step word problems.
