This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use quantum numbers to describe an electron within an atom.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • name the four quantum numbers that describe an electron within an atom,
  • describe each of the four quantum numbers and its notation,
  • identify the different values each quantum number can have,
  • describe the relationship between each of the quantum numbers and atomic orbitals,
  • write the quantum number for a particular electron within an atom,
  • determine the total number of electrons that can be assigned to each quantum number (e.g., 𝑛=2 can have 8 electrons max; 𝑛=2, 𝑙=1 can have 6 electrons max).

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • modern atomic theory,
  • electron shells,
  • atomic nucleus.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • quantum numbers for f orbitals or higher,
  • shapes of atomic orbitals,
  • spin–orbit coupling.
