This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to explain and identify hybridization of atomic orbitals.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe the creation of covalent bonds through orbital overlap,
  • describe the process of orbital hybridization,
  • explain the composition of and differences between sigma bonds and pi bonds,
  • list different ways of forming sigma bonds and pi bonds.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • electronic configuration and atomic orbitals,
  • common three-dimensional shapes of simple molecules.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • hybridization that includes d or f orbitals,
  • VSEPR.
