Lesson Plan: Hybridization Chemistry
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to explain and identify hybridization of atomic orbitals.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- describe the creation of covalent bonds through orbital overlap,
- describe the process of orbital hybridization,
- explain the composition of and differences between sigma bonds and pi bonds,
- list different ways of forming sigma bonds and pi bonds.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- electronic configuration and atomic orbitals,
- common three-dimensional shapes of simple molecules.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- hybridization that includes d or f orbitals,
- VSEPR.
