Lesson Plan: Measuring Temperatures Physics • First Year of Secondary School

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to correctly use thermometers to measure the temperature of liquids and gases.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • state which instruments can be used to accurately measure temperature (an analog thermometer and a digital thermometer),
  • use an analog or a digital thermometer correctly to measure the temperature of liquids or gases,
  • identify when and how a thermometer has been used incorrectly to measure temperature,
  • recall that a thermometer must be left for a few moments to adjust to the temperature of the substance it is measuring,
  • recall that in an analog thermometer with a visible meniscus, the reading should be taken from the middle of the meniscus and not the edge.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • adding and subtracting integers,
  • adding and subtracting decimals,
  • basic tabletop experiment equipment such as a Bunsen burner.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • measuring other quantities,
  • conversion between temperature scales,
  • any temperature scale other than degrees Celsius,
  • how either analog or digital thermometers work,
  • the expansion of materials due to heating,
  • the particle/kinetic theory of gases,
  • calculations of energies associated with heating,
  • states of matter and phase transitions.
