This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use the formula 𝐸 = 𝑄𝑉 to find the energy dissipated to the environment by the component of an electronic circuit.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • use 𝐸=𝑄𝑉 to determine the energy gained or lost, 𝐸, by a charge 𝑄 moving across a potential difference 𝑉,
  • use 𝑃=𝐼𝑉 to find the power of a circuit component given the current, 𝐼, through it and the potential difference, 𝑉, across it,
  • use 𝑃=𝐼𝑅.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • using 𝐼=𝑄𝑡 to calculate the current, 𝐼, through a circuit component given the charge, 𝑄, that passes through it in time 𝑡,
  • Ohm’s law: 𝑉=𝑅𝐼,
  • using 𝑃=𝐸𝑡 to find the power, 𝑃, of a circuit component given the amount of energy transferred by it, 𝐸, in time 𝑡,
  • adding potential differences and resistances in series,
  • adding currents in parallel.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • alternating current circuits,
  • electrical power transmission,
  • transformers,
  • the conservation of energy in circuits,
  • Kirchhoff’s laws.
