This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to represent a vector in space using a three-dimensional coordinate system.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • find the components of a vector that connects two points in 3D space using known coordinates,
  • find the components of a vector that connects two points in 3D space using simple addition and subtraction of vectors, specifically
    • 𝐴𝐵=𝑂𝐵𝑂𝐴,
    • 𝐴𝐵=𝐴𝑂+𝑂𝐵,
  • find the coordinates of an unknown point using the coordinates of a known point and the components of a known vector,
  • find the components of a 3D vector that is represented graphically.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • coordinates in 3D space,
  • addition and subtraction of vectors in 2D.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • general addition and subtraction of vectors,
  • transformations or vector operations.
