Lesson Plan: Addition of Rational Numbers Mathematics • 7th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to add rational numbers, including fractions, decimals, and percentages.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • use a number line to add rational numbers,
  • add rational numbers as fractions (including mixed numbers) with like denominators,
  • add rational numbers as fractions (including mixed numbers) with unlike denominators by using the LCM of the denominators,
  • add rational numbers in different forms,
  • convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages in order to add rational numbers of different forms.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the definition of a rational number,
  • simplifying fractions,
  • converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages,
  • addition of negative numbers.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • multiplication and division of rational numbers,
  • subtraction fractions,
  • evaluating algebraic expressions.
