Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe that atoms are composed of a nucleus and electrons,

  • explain why atoms are electrically neutral,
  • explain and determine the atomic number,
  • explain what electrons are,
  • describe what the mass number is,
  • calculate the mass number of an atom,
  • identify the atomic number and mass number from the elemental symbol.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • energy levels,
  • the history of the atom,
  • elements or compounds.
