Lesson Plan: The Atom Science
This lesson plan includes the objectives and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the composition of the atom, determine its atomic number, and calculate its mass number.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- describe that atoms are composed of a nucleus and electrons,
- describe the nucleus as containing positively charged particles called protons,
- describe the nucleus as containing neutral particles called neutrons,
- explain why atoms are electrically neutral,
- explain and determine the atomic number,
- explain what electrons are,
- describe what the mass number is,
- calculate the mass number of an atom,
- identify the atomic number and mass number from the elemental symbol.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- energy levels,
- the history of the atom,
- elements or compounds.
