Objectives

Students will be able to

  • measure objects using nonstandard units,
  • explain the relationship between the length of an object and the number of units needed to measure it,
  • explain the importance of understanding how to compare lengths,
  • demonstrate understanding that the length of an object does not change when measured with units of different lengths,
  • use measurements to compare lengths of objects.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • comparing objects visually using the words taller, longer, and shorter,
  • comparing and ordering objects visually using the words tallest, longest, and shortest.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • standard units of measurement (e.g., centimeters or inches).
