Lesson Plan: Nonstandard Units of Length Mathematics • Kindergarten
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use real-world objects to measure length or height and compare objects by length.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- measure objects using nonstandard units,
- explain the relationship between the length of an object and the number of units needed to measure it,
- explain the importance of understanding how to compare lengths,
- demonstrate understanding that the length of an object does not change when measured with units of different lengths,
- use measurements to compare lengths of objects.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- comparing objects visually using the words taller, longer, and shorter,
- comparing and ordering objects visually using the words tallest, longest, and shortest.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- standard units of measurement (e.g., centimeters or inches).
