This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the domain and range of a rational function either from its graph or its defining rule.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • find the domain of a rational function by setting the denominator to zero and solving the resulting equation,
  • find the range of a rational function by sketching its graph, looking at its behavior near the points where the denominator is zero, and looking at its behavior as 𝑥 becomes very large and positive or negative.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • algebraic fractions,
  • sketching graphs.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of rational functions,
  • asymptotes.
