Lesson Plan: Domain and Range of a Rational Function Mathematics • 10th Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the domain and range of a rational function either from its graph or its defining rule.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- find the domain of a rational function by setting the denominator to zero and solving the resulting equation,
- find the range of a rational function by sketching its graph, looking at its behavior near the points where the denominator is zero, and looking at its behavior as becomes very large and positive or negative.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- algebraic fractions,
- sketching graphs.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of rational functions,
- asymptotes.
