This lesson plan includes the objectives and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the formation of different types of polymers and list common examples and uses.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- explain the process of polymerization to show how monomers can combine in polymers,
- list uses of condensation and addition polymers to recognize the importance of these substances to modern society,
- compare and contrast the chemical reactions of addition and condensation polymerization in order to identify differences between the two reactions.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- condensation polymerization related to biological molecules such as amino acids,
- the formation of polyamides or complex polyesters, with condensation polymerization being discussed using only simple examples,
- condensation polymerization including acyl chlorides.
