This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe combining a galvanometer with a shunt resistor to design a DC ammeter.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe the appropriate connection of a galvanometer and shunt resistor to produce an ammeter,
  • explain the required resistance ratio of the galvanometer and shunt,
  • calculate the measurement range of an ammeter from the current required for a full-scale deflection of the galvanometer and the ratio of the resistance of the galvanometer to the shunt.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • galvanometers,
  • Ohm’s law,
  • parallel circuits.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • voltmeters,
  • ohmmeters,
  • calculations of magnetic fields.
