Lesson Plan: Design of the Ammeter Physics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe combining a galvanometer with a shunt resistor to design a DC ammeter.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- describe the appropriate connection of a galvanometer and shunt resistor to produce an ammeter,
- explain the required resistance ratio of the galvanometer and shunt,
- calculate the measurement range of an ammeter from the current required for a full-scale deflection of the galvanometer and the ratio of the resistance of the galvanometer to the shunt.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- galvanometers,
- Ohm’s law,
- parallel circuits.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- voltmeters,
- ohmmeters,
- calculations of magnetic fields.
