In this lesson, we will learn how to describe the Brownian motion of particles and how this explains the diffusion of gases.

Students will be able to

distinguish between random motion and predictable motion,
recognize that, for systems of large numbers of objects that each individually move predictably, the interactions between the objects make each object’s motion effectively random,
explain why the expansion of a gas that consists of particles in random motion results in diffusion of the gas from regions of higher concentration to lower concentration of its particles.
