Round 0.79 to the nearest tenth.

To round to the nearest tenth, we’ll first need to recognize the place values in this number. Starting to the left of the decimal point, these are the ones place. To the right of the decimal point, tenths. And next, hundredths.

To round something to the nearest tenth, we’ll need to examine the number to the right in the hundredths place. In our case, a nine. If the hundredths value is a less than or equal to four, then the tenths digit stays the same. If the digit in the hundredths place is greater than or equal to five, then the tenths digit is rounded up. Which of these is true in our case?

Nine is greater than or equal to five, which means we need to round the digit in the tenths place up. We need to round this seven up. The seven becomes an eight. We bring down the decimal point. We also carry down our zero.

And then we can say that 0.79, 79 hundredths, rounded to the nearest tenth is eight tenths, 0.8.
