While in Greece, Michael spent nine hours and 45 minutes visiting monuments. He spent 20 percent of the time visiting old temples. Find about how much time he spent visiting old temples.

So Michael spent 20 percent of his nine hours and 45 minutes visiting old temples. So we need to solve this. First, nine hours and 45 minutes, let’s convert this to only hours. So 45 minutes, 45 minutes out of one hour is 0.75 of the hour. It’s 75 percent of the hour essentially. So we need to add that to the nine hours. So 20 percent of the 9.75 hours were spent at the old temples.

So how do we solve this? The word “of” means to multiply. Now we can either take 20 percent and change it to a decimal or a fraction. It doesn’t matter. If we change it to a decimal, we drop the percentage sign. And then we move the decimal point two places to the left. So it would be here. So we have 0.20 times 9.75 hours.

Now we added in that zero before the decimal point just so that decimal point sticks out a little better. So when multiplying, we get 1.95 hours. But it says, “Find about how much time.” So that’s about two hours.
