Add 544 and 438. Use place value blocks if you need to. Hint: Do you need to regroup ones or tens?

Let’s start by adding the ones, eight and four. Eight and two more makes 10. 10 and two more makes 12. When we have more than 10 ones, we need to regroup them into a tens rod. We regrouped 10 ones. Then we can move the 10 into the tens column.

Now, we have two ones. And we added an extra 10 in the tens column. So we have four tens and three tens, which makes seven, plus one more, which makes eight. Now, we can just add in the hundreds column, five and four more. Five, six, seven, eight, nine. 544 add 438 equals 982.
