Which color line shows the object
that has the greatest speed?
Here, we’ve been given a speed–time
graph that shows the motion of three different objects using three lines, one red,
blue, and orange. We wanna figure out which line
shows the object with the greatest speed. Let’s begin by taking a closer look
at the graph. We can see that the vertical axis
shows the speed at which the objects travel, and the horizontal axis shows the time
that the objects are traveling for. Notice that all three of the lines
on the graph are horizontal. So each one remains fixed at a
certain value of speed as time goes on. This tells us that the objects
represented by the red, blue, and orange lines all move at constant speeds. But this does not mean that they
all move at the same speed.
In fact, we know that each object
moves at a different speed, since each line has a different value on the vertical or
speed axis. We wanna know which line shows the
greatest speed. So that’s whatever line has the
greatest value on the speed axis. We can see that the red line is
higher up along this axis than both the blue line and the orange line, so we have
our answer. On this speed–time graph, the color
of the line that shows the object with the greatest speed is red.
