The price of one gram of silver is 11 pounds. How much is eight kilograms of silver?
The first thing that we need to remember here is the conversion from kilograms to grams. One kilogram is equal to 1000 grams. We are asked to calculate the cost of eight kilograms of silver. As one multiplied by eight is equal to eight, we need to multiply 1000 by eight to work out how many grams this is equivalent to. 1000 multiplied by eight is equal to 8000. Therefore, eight kilograms is equal to 8000 grams.
We were also told in the question that the price of one gram of silver is 11 pounds. We need to calculate the cost of 8000 grams of silver. One multiplied by 8000 is equal to 8000. Therefore, we need to multiply 11 pounds by 8000. From our times tables, we know that 11 multiplied by eight is equal to 88. 11 multiplied by 8000 is therefore the same as 11 multiplied by eight multiplied by 1000. This is the same as 88 multiplied by 1000.
Multiplying by 10 moves all our digits one place to the left. Multiplying by 100 moves them two places to the left. And, multiplying by 1000 moves all the digits three places to the left. This is because there are three zeros in 1000. The eight in the tens column moves to the ten thousands column. And, the eight in the units or ones column moves to the thousands column. This means that 88 multiplied by 1000 is equal to 88000. This means that 8000 grams of silver costs 88000 pounds. As 8000 grams is the same as eight kilograms, then eight kilograms of silver cost 88000 pounds.
