There are 27 students in one class and 60 students in another. How many students are there in total?

So one of the classes has 27 students, and the other class has 60 students. And we’re asked how many students are there in total. So if we want the total, we need to add the number of students together. So we need to add 27 and 60 together, and this will be our total.

So in order to add, we will add the seven and the zero together, because we add the ones column first. And seven plus zero is seven. Next, we add the tens column together. And six plus two is eight. So there are a total of 87 students.

Now when we were adding, if we’d added numbers in the ones place and it would have been a double digit, so higher than nine, we would have to carry over to the tens place. But that didn’t happen here. So the number of students in total would be 87.
