Open and Closed Shapes
In this video, we will learn how to
identify and draw open and closed shapes.
An open shape is a shape whose line
segments or curves do not meet. The two ends of this shape don’t
meet. This is an open shape. This is also an open shape. Its line segments do not meet. We call this a closed shape. Its line segments meet. They’re all connected. If we started drawing at the pink
dot and drew all the way around the shape, we’d end up back at the pink dot
again. This is also a closed shape because
all of its line segments are connected. Let’s try some questions now where
we have to practice identifying open and closed shapes.
Is the shape open or closed?
In this question, we’re given a
shape. We have to identify whether the
shape is open or closed. Let’s draw the shape. It has one, two, three, four
sides. We started drawing at this point,
and we finished drawing at this point. All of the sides or edges of this
shape are connected. Because each of the line segments
meet, we call this a closed shape. The shape is closed.
Find the shape that has six sides
and is not closed.
We’re looking for the shape which
has six sides and not closed. If a shape is not closed, it means
it’s open. So, we’re looking for the shape
that has six sides and is an open shape. This shape is a closed shape. All of its sides meet. One, two, three, four. We’re back to the point where we
started. The line segments are all
connected. They all meet. We know this is not the shape we’re
looking for. It has four sides, and it’s a
closed shape.
We’re looking for a shape with six
sides which is open. Two of our three shapes are
open. Which one has six sides? Let’s count the number of sides the
first shape has. One, two, three, four, five,
six. This is the shape that has six
sides and is not closed. We know that this shape is not
closed. Let’s just check how many sides it
has. One, two, three, four, five. We found a shape that has six sides
and is not closed.
Is the curve open or closed?
In this question, we’re shown a
curved shape. We have to decide if it’s open or
closed. An open curve is a curve which
doesn’t meet. This is an open curve. The start and end points don’t
meet. Let’s try to draw the given
curve. The pink dot is our start
point. And we can draw from the start
point all the way around the curve back to the start point again. The curve is connected. The start and end point are the
same. This curve is a closed curve.
Is the shape of the number two an
open curve?
In this question, we’re asked if
the number two is an open curve. Let’s draw a number two. This is our start point. We go all the way around. Our end point is here. These two points don’t meet. Our curve is not connected. So, the answer to the question “is
the shape of a number two an open curve?” is yes, the number two is an open
curve.
What have we learned in this
video? We have learned how to identify and
draw open shapes or figures and closed shapes.
