Lesson Plan: Network Covalent Structures Chemistry
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to recognize network covalent structures and describe their general properties.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- compare the difference in structure between simple molecular and network covalent structures,
- recognize network covalent structures from diagrams showing their bonding and structure,
- compare the strengths of intermolecular forces and covalent bonding between network covalent structures and simple molecular structures,
- describe the properties of network covalent structures and how they link to their strong covalent bonds.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- covalent bonding,
- ionic bonding,
- the relationship between melting and boiling points and intermolecular forces.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- crystal structures and terminology (e.g., unit cells, Bravais lattices),
- allotropes of carbon (except diamond).
