Lesson Plan: Cells: Unicellular Organisms
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to define unicellular organisms and name and describe parts of a yeast fungus cell.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- define unicellular organisms,
- give examples of unicellular organisms,
- describe how unicellular organisms can be beneficial or harmful,
- use a microscope to examine parts of a yeast fungus cell,
- compare a yeast fungus cell to animal and plant cells,
- describe uses of yeast fungus.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the idea that living things such as animals and plants are complex organisms and that many parts work together to perform a function,
- levels of organization of organisms,
- the basic parts of a plant, such as the roots, stem, and leaves,
- the components of animal and plant cells,
- some major organs in animals, such as the stomach and intestines.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- parts of the cell other than the nucleus, cytoplasm, plasma membrane, sap vacuole, small vacuole, chloroplast, and cell wall.
