Lesson Plan: The Eye Biology

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the structures and functions of the components of the eye and explain how common eye defects can be treated.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe the main structures of the eye, including the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, cells of the retina, optic nerve, ciliary muscles, and suspensory ligaments,
  • explain how these structures are adapted for their functions,
  • outline how all these structures work together to enable sight,
  • describe how common eye defects can be caused, including cataracts, color blindness, and nearsightedness or farsightedness,
  • describe some treatments for these eye defects, including simple operations, wearing glasses or contact lenses, and laser eye surgery.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the eye as the organ of sight.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the process of information transfer between optical nerves and the brain,
  • ray diagrams.
