This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the electrical bonds in pure semiconductor materials.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe the motions of free electrons between atoms in an atomic lattice of a semiconducting element,
  • relate the abundance of free electrons to vacancies in an atomic lattice of a semiconducting element,
  • describe the effect of temperature changes and equilibrium temperature on a pure semiconductor,
  • distinguish between interactions involving valence electrons and other bound electrons.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • covalent bonding.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • doping of semiconductors,
  • quantitative modeling of electron motion.
