Lesson Plan: The Cosine Rule Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use the cosine rule to find missing sides and angles in different triangles.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • use 𝑎=𝑏+𝑐2𝑏𝑐(𝐴)cos to find a missing side or angle of a triangle,
  • use 𝑎=𝑏+𝑐2𝑏𝑐(𝐴)cos in conjunction with other angle facts to find a missing side or angle of a triangle.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • how to find the perimeter of a shape given its side lengths,
  • the idea that the angles in a triangle add up to 180,
  • the idea that an isosceles triangle has two equal angles and two equal sides,
  • how to use trigonometry to find missing sides and angles of right triangles.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the sine rule,
  • Heron’s formula.
