This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to recall the levels in the taxonomic hierarchy and apply this knowledge to example organisms.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- recall that a species is a group of similar organisms that are able to breed to produce fertile offspring,
- state the levels in the taxonomic hierarchy as being kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species,
- understand that the binomial naming system gives an organism a genus and a species name,
- apply knowledge of the taxonomic hierarchy to classify given organisms or recognize what taxonomic groups they belong to.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the concept of classification,
- the fact that organisms that are closely related will look similar.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the three domains.
