Lesson Plan: Derivatives of Vector-Valued Functions Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to determine the derivatives of vector-valued functions and find unit tangent vectors.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • find the derivative of a vector-valued function by differentiating each component,
  • find the derivative of the dot and cross products of two vector-valued functions,
  • find the tangent line at a point,
  • find the unit tangent vector at a point.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • vectors in 2 and 3 dimensions,
  • dot and cross products of vectors,
  • differentiation.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • integrals of vector-valued functions.
