Lesson Plan: Deforestation

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the impacts of deforestation and habitat removal on biodiversity.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • define the term deforestation,
  • explain why deforestation occurs and evaluate the impact of this on biodiversity,
  • recognize the harmful effects of deforestation on humans and the ecosystem,
  • explain the impact of the destruction of peat bogs on biodiversity.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the term habitat,
  • greenhouse gasses, the greenhouse effect, and the resulting climate change,
  • the reasons why we should try to maintain biodiversity.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the impacts of habitat removal of other habitats than forests and peat bogs.
