This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use the Pythagorean theorem to find the length of the hypotenuse or a leg of a right triangle and its area.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- recall and prove the Pythagorean theorem,
- use the Pythagorean theorem to find the length of the hypotenuse of a right triangle,
- use the Pythagorean theorem to find the length of a leg of a right triangle,
- solve geometric problems using the Pythagorean theorem.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- finding the area of a triangle,
- finding the area of a square,
- identifying the hypotenuse and legs of a right triangle.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the converse Pythagorean theorem.
