This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe direct variation between two variables and use this to solve word problems.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • identify direct variation and find the constant of proportionality/variation (unit rate) between two quantities from their graph,
  • identify direct variation from a table of values, a description, or an equation and find the constant of proportionality/variation (unit rate) between two quantities,
  • solve for a missing value given a proportional relationship,
  • write an equation describing direct variation,
  • solve real-life word problems involving direct variation.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • ratios and proportion,
  • linear functions,
  • graphing linear functions.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • inverse variation,
  • proportionality to other degrees of 𝑥 (e.g., when 𝑦 varies as 𝑥 or 𝑥),
  • combined variation,
  • joint variation.
